Sunday Morning Circuit

It's the weekend, you wake up look outside and it's a beautiful sunny morning. What better way to kick start the day than to head to a local park or water side destination and do a 30 minute circuit session. It gets the heart pumping, the muscles working and the sweat up without feeling like you're eating too far into your final day of the weekend.

And the best part of it... Once it's done you get to enjoy the rest of your day guilt free! I know I personally love getting my workouts done in the morning. Not only does it kick start the metabolism and leaves you feeling awake and alert but it just means you never have to feel guilty if you decide to spend that bit longer lazing at the beach in the afternoon or snuggling up to watch that movie because the weather's decided to turn.

With my circuits I always like to choose a handful of exercises that incorporate the upper and lower body as well as the core. I usually choose to perform the routine 3-5 times depending how much energy I have to burn (or how guilty I'm feeling for indulging in that dessert last night). The beauty of these types of workouts is not needing any equipment and using your surrounds as the basis of your exercises. A couple of my favourite circuit spots include the parks at Avalon and Mona Vale beaches.. You've got grass, you've got benches and you've got the water to cool off in after!

A typical circuit for me looks like:

  • 20 squats
  • 20 push-ups
  • 20 lunges
  • 20 dips
  • 20 step ups
  • 30 second plank
  • 1 minute walk/run

Looking at that list and thinking "yeah right"? Don't worry all these exercises can be modified to be made easier or can be substituted for a different exercise all together, just ask me how. The important thing about exercising is to enjoy it, have variety and not let injury get in your way.

As I always say, you will never regret doing it, you will only ever regret not having done it. So get out there and enjoy the morning sunshine in the magical surrounds of the northern beaches.

Good luck in your circuit training!
